The Bavarian State Opera (Bayerische Staatsoper) has announced the appointment of Czech conductor Petr Popelka as its next General Music Director. His tenure will begin in the 2029/2030 season, succeeding Vladimir Jurowski, who has held the position since the 2021/2022 season.
Popelka is a 40-year-old native of Prague. After studying the double bass in Prague and at the Freiburg University of Music in Germany, he joined the Staatskapelle Dresden (Saxon State Opera Orchestra) in 2010, serving as associate principal player. He left the orchestra in 2019 and subsequently transitioned to a career as a conductor, studying under Paavo Järvi and Jaap van Zweden.
Subsequently, he served as Chief Conductor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra (2020–2023) and as Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra (2022–2026). He has served as Chief Conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra since the 2024/2025 season.
