The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has announced the program for its New Year’s Concert on New Year’s Day 2025. 2025 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Johann Strauss. Riccardo Muti will be making his seventh appearance as conductor, the most of any conductor currently active, following his appearances in 1993, 1997, 2000, 2004, 2018 and 2021.
The program is as follows, and the new feature is that it will be the first time to perform the work of a female composer, and it will perform “Ferdinand Waltz” by Austrian composer Konstanze Geiger (1835-1890).
Geiger was a talented woman who also worked as a pianist, actress and soprano singer, and it is said that she performed in public at the age of 6 and that her works were performed at the age of 9.
The New Year’s Concert is an annual event held by the Vienna Philharmonic in the Musikverein’s main hall on New Year’s Day. It is a musical New Year’s greeting from the city of music, featuring waltzes and polkas by the Strauss family.
In 2025, in addition to the works by Geiger, the overture to the operetta “The Violet Girl” by Hellmesberger will be performed for the first time.
