TOKYO 〓 Nippon Music Foundation began loaning Spanish violinist María Dueñas a Stradivarius “Camposelice”

2023/01/11

The Nippon Music Foundation recently began loaning Spanish violinist María Dueñas a 1710 Stradivarius “Camposelice”. To Dueñas, the Foundation had loaned a 1736 Guarneri del Gesu “Munz” from July 2019.

The loaned “Camposelice” was purchased by the foundation in 2004 and is named after the duke who purchased the instrument in 1884. Philanthropist Isabella Stewart Gardner, who founded the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, owned it from 1894 to 1925, after which it was owned by Czech violinist Váša Příhoda and others.

Dueñas, 20, was born in Granada, Spain, and came to prominence by winning the 2018 Vladimir Spivakov International Violin Competition, the 2021 Victor Tretyakov International Violin Competition, and the Yehudi Menuhin International Competition in succession.

Currently she is a student of Boris Kuschnir at the Music and Art Private University of Vienna, and continues to perform with prominent orchestras, she has begun her international career. Last year, she signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon.

Her debut album will be released this May, a recording of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra conducted by Manfred Honeck. Dueñas, who enjoys composing, has written a cadenza for this concerto.
