On February 25, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra decided to named Kent Nagano, who retired from his post as music director in 2020, the title of “Conductor Emeritus”. Nagano has been a music director since 2006.
Nagano is the third person to receive the title of “Conductor Emeritus”. It has been given to the founder of the orchestra, Wilfrid Pelletier, and to Zubin Mehta, who was the music director from 1961 to 1967.
On the other hand, it has not been given to Charles Dutoit, the longest music director of all time, who was in charge of it for 25 years from 1977 to 2002.
The orchestra built a golden age during that period and gained worldwide fame, but Dutoit suddenly resigned in 2002 after confronting the orchestra over his power harassment. Also, in 2019, his incumbent sexual harassment was accused and is being investigated by the orchestra.
