2022/04/20

The World Federation Of International Music Competitions announced on 13 April that the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Russia is no longer a member. The decision to exclude them with immediate effect.

The Federation was formed in 1957. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, it consists exclusively of world-renowned competitions and, as of January 2021, had 115 member competitions and is a member of the UNESCO International Music Council.

According to the announcement, the decision was taken after an extraordinary general meeting on 13 April by an overwhelming majority vote of the membership. In a statement, it said, “Many laureates of the Tchaikovsky Competition are among the leading artists of today. However, in the face of Russia´s brutal war and humanitarian atrocities in Ukraine, the WFIMC as an apolitical organization cannot support or have as a member, a competition financed and used as a promotional tool by the Russian regime.”.

The International Tchaikovsky Competition was founded in 1958. In principle, it is held in Moscow every four years and is one of the world’s three major competitions, along with the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition and the Chopin International Piano Competition, and has produced a number of renowned artists.
