Italian tenor singer Giuseppe Giacomini has died of a heart attack. He was 80 years old. Nicknamed “Bepi,” he captivated a large audience with his powerful, dynamic singing and accurate expression. He continued to play an active role internationally as one of the leading singers after the war.

He was born in Veggiano near Padua in northern Italy. After graduating from Padova’s National Cesare Pollini Conservatory at the top of his class, he changed from baritone to tenor. He won many international competitions, including the Viotti Competition, and made his professional debut in 1966 as Pinkerton.

In 1970, he entered an overseas opera house. In the 1980s, he succeeded in playing roles such as Radames, Otello, Cavaradossi, and Canio, and appeared in major opera houses around the world as a leading figure in dramatic tenor.

Although he retired from the opera stage in 2000, he continues to be a singer, performing a recital in 2010 with the opening of the Tianjin Concert Hall. For the last few years he has had a stroke.
