Royal Opera House Extends Contract with Antonio Pappano. He has been a music director since 2002, and his term extends until the 2022/2023 season. However, during the 2019/2020 season he takes a vacation, during which he plays guests at Teatro alla Scala, Metropolitan Opera, Berlin State Opera. Pappano was born in Epstein, Essex, England in 1959. His parents are Italian, and since 2005 he has also served as music director of Rome’s Santa Cecilia National Academy Orchestra.
