US violinist Nancy Zhou (25) won the 2nd “Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition”. The first prize is 100 thousand dollars. The final round took place from 30th August to 1st September, the 2nd prize is Olga Šroubková (25) in Czech Republic, the 3rd prize is Diana Tishchenko in Ukraine (28). China’s Jia Yi Chen (22) ranked 4th, Chang Yuan Ting (18) in Canada ranked 5th, Yun Tang (26) in China ranked 6th.

The winner Zhou was born in Texas, studied at the New England Conservatory, a semi-finalist of the “Elisabeth Queen International Music Competition” in 2012, and a finalist of the “Sibelius International Violin Competition” in 2015. She is also a scholar of “The Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation”.

The contest was established in commemoration of Isaac Stern (1920-2001), the mastro of the violin representing the 20th century. Organized by Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. There are 15 judges, Zakhar Bron, Maxim Vengerov, Philip Setzer, Martin Campbell-White and others have their faces. The first competition was held in 2016, and Japanese violinist Mayu Kishima (32) won the 1st prize.

Stern was visited in June 1979 in response to Foreign Minister Zhou Enlai’s invitation from China. It involves families and pianists, and staying for a month is deeply related to China. During his stay, he made public lessons and concerts. In 1980, a documentary film “From Mao to Mozart – Isacc Stern in China” photographing his state in China has been released.
