The Spanish conductor and former music director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Jesús López Cobos, died at the age of 78 years. The Spanish media reported that he succumbed to cancer in the Berlin on the morning of 2 March 2018.

As a philosophy student, who until then had not enjoyed regular music lessons, he led the university choir in the early 1960s in Madrid. From 1981 to 1990 he was General Music Director of the Deutsche Oper.

In other stages of his life he served as Music Director of the Spanish National Orchestra, Chief Conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Lausanne, and from 2003 to 2010 as Music Director of the Teatro Real in Madrid.
