Around the Music Festival

Pianist Martha Argerich is set to visit Taiwan in November for the “Argerich Festival in Taiwan,” which will take place across three cities.

The festival is under the musical direction of Argerich’s eldest daughter, violist Lyda Chen-Argerich, and also features Lyda’s son—18-year-old pianist David Chen-Sverdlov—marking the first time three generations of the Argerich family will perform together in concert.

The performances will take place on November 10, 12, and 15. The tour will visit the Weiwuying Concert Hall in Kaohsiung, the National Concert Hall in Taipei, and the Pingtung Performing Arts Center, featuring collaborations with the Evergreen Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Lyda.

The Kaohsiung performance will mark the first time three generations of the Argerich family perform together, with Argerich and her grandson David performing Poulenc’s 《Concerto for Two Pianos》 under Lyda’s conducting.

In 1963, at the age of 22, Argerich married the Chinese conductor Robert Chen (Chen Liangsheng). Born in Shanghai, China, Chen later moved to Hong Kong and then to the United States, where he studied at the University of California, Berkeley, and Princeton University, as well as at the Conservatoire de musique de Genève in Switzerland; he passed away in February 2022 at the age of 89.

However, the couple divorced in 1964, prior to the birth of their eldest daughter, Lyda. Argerich subsequently remarried in 1969, this time to the conductor Charles Dutoit.
