Finnish conductor Klaus Mäkelä will step down as chief conductor of Norway’s Oslo-filharmonien at the end of the 2025/2026 season, one year before his term was scheduled to end.Mäkelä has held the position since the 2020/2021 season. For his final season, he will lead the orchestra on a tour visiting Hamburg, Vienna, Paris, and Essen in January 2026.

Makela is a 29-year-old born in Helsinki.He has been appointed as the 11th Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the 8th Principal Conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, Netherlands, starting with the 2027/2028 season.

Currently, alongside his work with the Oslo Philharmonic, he serves as Music Director of the Orchestre de Paris (2022–), a position he will leave in 2027.

He made his recording debut with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra performing the complete symphonies of Sibelius.Subsequently, he released recordings on the Decca label featuring Prokofiev and Sibelius violin concertos with solist Janine Jansen, as well as Shostakovich symphonies.

He and the orchestra have toured Europe and Asia, and have appeared as guests at international music festivals including Salzburg, Lucerne, and the BBC Proms.
