French mezzo-soprano Béatrice Uria-Monzon passed away on July 19 at the age of 61. Born after World War II, she was internationally renowned for her performances as Carmen.

Born in Agen, southern France, she is the daughter of Spanish painter Antonio Yuria-Monzon. She studied at the University of Bordeaux and the Bordeaux Conservatory of Music.

After graduating from the National Opera Singer Training Center in Marseille, she began her career as a member of the Paris National Opera. Her dark voice was described as “amber-colored,” and she was in high demand at famous opera houses around the world for her role as Carmen.

She also performed a wide repertoire of French and Italian roles. Her last opera performance was in Boito’s “Mefistofele” at the Capitole Theater in Toulouse, France, from June to July 2023.
