The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra announced that this year’s “Europe Concert” will be held in Tsinandali, eastern Georgia. The concert will be conducted by Daniel Barenboim. The concert will be streamed live on the orchestra’s channel “Digital Concert Hall” and other channels.
According to the announcement, the concert will take place in the amphitheater on the farm where the Tsinandali Festival has been held since 2019. The program will feature Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and Brahms’ Violin Concerto, with Georgian-born Lisa Batiashvili as the soloist. She is also the orchestra’s “Artist in Residence” for the 2023/2024 season.
The Orchestra’s “Europe Concerts” were founded in 1991 on the idea of Claudio Abbado, who succeeded Herbert von Karajan as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director. It has been held annually on May 1, the anniversary of the orchestra’s founding, in halls and historical buildings throughout Europe.
Last year, the 2023 festival was held in Barcelona, Spain, and the 2022 festival was scheduled to be held in Odesa, Ukraine, but due to Russia’s armed invasion of Ukraine, the venue was changed to Liepāja, a city on the Baltic Sea coast of western Latvia. This is the first time the event has been held outside Europe.
