The Opéra de Nice has announced that it will welcome Italian conductor Daniele Callegari as its new music director. The successor to the Hungarian conductor György Győriványi-Ráth, who has been in charge for the past three years.
Callegari was born in Milan and is 61 years old. He studied contrabass and percussion at the Milan Conservatory, graduated and joined the Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala. He then relearned conducting at the Milan Conservatory again and made his conductor debut in 1993 at the Massimo Theater in Palermo.
Since then, he has been Principal Conductor of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra (2002-2008) and the Wexford Opera Festival in Ireland (1998-2001). He continues to perform as a guest in major opera houses and orchestras.
