The Music festival is establish in 1996, and held every May. It takes place for about three weeks.

The main venue is the “Medkit Arts Center”, where is the former “Miyazaki Prefectural Art Theater”.

When it was founded, It started as “Miyazaki International Chamber Music Festival” with Tsugio Tokunaga, the leading violinist in Japan, as a General producer.

The festival also invited legendary violinist Isaac Stern as an artistic advisor. Under his philosophy, the festival has focused on educational programs.

The festival invited Asian young performers who will be responsible for the next generation from the beginning. Stern described the festival as “a place to build music together, not a place to teach.”

From the seventh in 2002, the festival changed the name to “Miyazaki International Music Festival”, so that not only chamber music, but also the orchestra and vocal programs will be taken up.

From 2004 to 2010, the conductor Charles Dutoit joined as an artistic director. The festival in response to his proposal, created a street concert.

From 2011 after Dutoit’s retirement, Tokunaga became a Music director.
