About 2 hours by car from Bologna. Facing the Adriatic Sea, Ravenna is an ancient city known for its former Western Roman capital.
The city has 8 buildings, including the masterpiece of early Byzantine art, the San Vitale church and the typical Basilica-style Santa Polinale in Classe church etc. They are registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.”
Florence-born poet Dante Alighieri passed through his later years, wrote “The Divine Comedy”, and is sleeping in this city.
The festival from May to July was founded in 1990 by Ms. Christina, the wife of famous conductor Riccardo Muti. The program ranges widely from opera, chamber music, orchestra concert, religious music, baroque music, and contemporary music. Another feature is that they are focusing on ballet.
In addition to the summer program, festival had an opera performance in November called “Autumn Trilogy” since 2012. They are based on the Alighieri Theater, in addition to historical buildings such as churches, performances will also be held at the Palazzo Mauro Andre, an indoor stadium that houses 3,200 people.
Originally performed by the Vienna Philharmonic and the Milano Scala Orchestra, which are closely related to Muti. In 2004, the “Luigi Cherubini” Youth Orchestra is organized as a resident orchestra and plays a central role.
In 1997, the festival had performance in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since then, they has also been working on outreach activities named “The Way of Friendship”, and active in overseas performances.
