Among the many Italian opera houses, Florence’s “Teatro Comunale” has been the lowest rank in me. The bottom! Of course, this is not an evaluation of the Opera Company.
It is also the theater that has made the historical performance of “Turandot” at the Forbidden City in Beijing, directed by the Chinese film director Zhang Yìmou. Everyone admits that this theater is a talented group that occupies one of the top leagues of the opera world.
So which part was the lowest? It’s all about the opera house building being very poor. Compared to other theaters, the building is not gorgeous. However, the problem was solved at the end of 2011 with the opening of the “New Opera Theater” about 200 meters northwest of the “Teatro Comunale”.
The new theater has a modern design that combines a “shining box” where light leaks through the gaps in the outer walls at night and a “tilted box” in front of it.
It has a 1800-seat large theater, a 1000-seat auditorium, and a 2000-seat outdoor theater. With this, it is no longer possible to complain about both hardware and software.
The theater’s “Maggio Musicale” was founded in 1933 by the famous conductor Vittorio Gui, and has made a name for itself as one of Europe’s many music festivals.
From the 2019/2020 season, the opera company will welcome Alexander Pereira, who has been head of the Zurich Opera, Salzburg Festival and Teatro alla Scala. How is Pereira known for his aggressive attitude?
