CARDIFF 〓 Thomas Hanus extends contract with Welsh National Opera

Czech conductor Thomas Hanus has extended his contract with the Welsh National Opera. Hanus has been a music director since the 2016/2017 season, and his contract will extend his term to 2026. The Welsh National Opera is based in Cardiff. Founded in 1943, it is known not only for performances in its hometown but also as an opera company traveling around Britain. Until last year, director David Pountney was artistic director.

Hanus was born in Brno, Czech Republic in 1970. He studied conducting at the Janacek Academy of Music and Drama in Brno from Jiří Bělohlávek. He won the International Conductor Competition in Katowice in 1999. In 2001 he debuted at the Prague State Opera as an opera conductor. Since then, he has been conducting at opera houses around Europe and was the music director of the Brno State Opera from 2007 to 2009.
