He subsequently served as music director for the Opéra National de Lyon (1998–2000), Glyndebourne Touring Opera (1998–2003), and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège in Belgium (2001–2006).
Following his American debut at the Spoleto Festival USA, he served as music director of the Mostly Mozart Festival—a summer music festival held at Lincoln Center in New York from 2003 to 2023—and has served as music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra since 2013.
