The London Philharmonic Orchestra has announced that Paavo Järvi will be its next Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor. The term will be for five years, starting from the 2028/2029 season. He will take up the position from the 2022/2023 season, succeeding Edward Gardner, whose seven-year term will expire.

Järvi was born in Tallinn, Estonia, and is 63 years old. After studying at the Tallinn Conservatory, he followed his father, the conductor Neeme, to the United States, where he obtained U.S. citizenship.

He studied conducting at the Curtis Institute of Music and then at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Conservatory under Leonard Bernstein. He also studied under masters such as Eugene Ormandy, Antal Doráti, and Georg Solti.

He has previously served as Principal Conductor of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra in Sweden (1994-1997), Music Director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (2001-2011), Principal Conductor of the HR Symphony Orchestra in Frankfurt, Germany (2006-2013), Music Director of the Orchestre de Paris (2010-2016), and the first Principal Conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra (2015-2022).

He is currently one of the busiest conductors in the world, serving as artistic director of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen (since 2004) and music director of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich (since 2019), and making guest appearances with orchestras around the world. He will be making his first guest appearance with the London Philharmonic in 2023.
