Järvi was born in Tallinn, Estonia, and is 63 years old. After studying at the Tallinn Conservatory, he followed his father, the conductor Neeme, to the United States, where he obtained U.S. citizenship.

He studied conducting at the Curtis Institute of Music and then at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Conservatory under Leonard Bernstein. He also studied under masters such as Eugene Ormandy, Antal Doráti, and Georg Solti.
