The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has announced the program for its New Year’s Concert on New Year’s Day 2026. The conductor for 2026 will be Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who will be making his first appearance.

The highlight of the 2026 program will be the work of Florence Price (1888-1953), a black American female composer. In 2025, Riccardo Muti set a precedent for female composers by taking up the works of Austrian Constanze Geiger (1835-1890) for the first time.

Price was born in Little Rock and was accepted into the prestigious New England Conservatory in Boston at the age of 14. Her Symphony No. 1 won first place in a composition competition in 1932. It premiered the following year with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, making her the first black woman to compose a symphony.

The New Year’s Concert is an annual event held by the Vienna Philharmonic every New Year’s Day at the Vienna Philharmonic’s home grounds, the Musikverein. It is a musical New Year’s card from the capital of music, featuring waltzes and polkas by the Strauss family.
