NEW YORK 〓 Metropolitan Opera Extends Contract with Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin

The Metropolitan Opera in the United States has extended the contract of its music director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Nézet-Séguin has been in his position since 2018, and this time his term will be extended for six years, through the end of the 2029/2030 season.

Nézet-Séguin, 49, was born in Montreal, Canada, and was appointed Music Advisor to the Montreal Opera in 2000 and Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Orchestre Metropolitain de Grand Montréal. He later served as Music Director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra (2008-2018).

From 2009 to 2010, he made a series of debuts with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Metropolitan Opera, and since the 2012/2013 season he has served as the 8th Music Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

According to the announcement, Nézet-Séguin will conduct four to five operas per season for the next six years. This includes a new production of Wagner’s “Ring of the Nibelung,” which is scheduled to be presented in the 2027/2028 season. The new “Ring” will be directed by Yuval Sharon.
