The Bachfest Leipzig has announced that the Bach Medal for 2024 will be awarded to harpsichordist and pianist Andreas Staier. The medal, made of Meissen porcelain, has been awarded by the city of Leipzig since 2003 during the festival to individuals who have distinguished themselves in the study and performance of the composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750).
Staier is 68 years old and was born in Göttingen, Germany. After studying at the Hanover University of Music, he was a member of the ancient music ensemble “Musica Antiqua Cologne” (1983-1986). Later, he participated in the founding of the ensemble “Ensemble Les Adieux” and began his career as a chamber musician and accompanist for lieder.
On the other hand, as a soloist, he has performed with old instrument orchestras such as the Concerto Cologne, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music, and the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées in Paris. He has made many recordings of harpsichord, piano, chamber music, and songs ranging from Baroque to Romantic music.
