BAYREUTH 〓 Bayreuth Festival announced a change of conductor for “The Ring of the Nibelung”

2022/07/18

On July 15, the Bayreuther Festspiele in Germany announced a change of conductor for “The Ring of the Nibelung,” which will switch to a new production this year.

The scheduled conductor, Pietari Inkinen, has been infected with a new coronavirus and is said to be suffering from a serious coronary artery disease. His replacement is Cornelius Meister, who was scheduled to make his festival debut conducting “Tristan und Isolde. Markus Poschner will also fill in for Meister.

The new “Ring of the Nibelung” would have begun performances in 2020 if not for the Corona disaster. The new production is being directed by Valentin Schwarz.

Meister made his conducting debut after studying piano and conducting at the Hanover University of Music and Drama, and was appointed General Music Director of the Heidelberg City Theatre in 2005 at the young age of 25.

He then served as Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra (2010-2018) before becoming General Music Director of the Stuttgart State Opera in the 2018/2019 season.

In Japan, he also served as Principal Guest Conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra from 2017-2020.
