2022/04/11

Canada’s Toronto Symphony Orchestra held a special concert on 9 April featuring five of its music directors. The event celebrated the orchestra’s 100th anniversary and was held at its home, Roy Thomson Hall.

The gathering included Andrew Davis (1975 – 1988), Günther Herbig (1988 – 1994), Jukka-Pekka Saraste (1994 – 2001), Peter Oundjian (2004 – 2018) and Gustavo Gimeno, who is music director from 2020. The group is made up of five of the six living people who have been music directors. Only Seiji Ozawa (1965 – 1969) was unable to participate.

Davis and Helbig took the stage in the first half. Davis conducted Berlioz’s “The Carnival of Rome” and “The Walk to the Paradise Garden” by Delius. Helbig conducted the overture to Wagner’s opera Tannhäuser.

In the second half, Saraste conducts “Lemminkäinen and the Maidens of the Island” from Sibelius’ Suite “Lemminkäinen”. Oundjian took up Alexina Louie’s “The Ringing Earth” and Smetana’s “Sárka” from his symphonic poem “Má vlast”, while Gimeno concluded with Ravel’s Spanish Rhapsody.
