2022/01/13

The Seattle Symphony has announced the sudden resignation of music director Thomas Dausgaard. His term was due to expire in the 2022/23 season. Moreover, he suddenly notified the orchestra of his resignation by e-mail.

Dausgaard was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1963 and is 58 years old. After studying at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen and the Royal College of Music in London, he became Principal Conductor of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra in 1997. He has been the Principal Conductor of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra since 2004.

He first conducted the Seattle Symphony in 2010. He became Principal Guest Conductor in 2014 and has been Music Director since 2019.

The official reason for his resignation is said to be a “pandemic.” However, Dausgaard told The New York Times that “the orchestra was ruled by fear,” and his true reason appear to be elsewhere.
