TOKYO 〓 The New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra appointed Yutaka Sado as the next music director

The New Japan Philharmonic announced on August 27 that it will welcome Yutaka Sado as the next music director. He succeeded Toshiyuki Kamioka, who had been in charge since 2016, and became the fifth music director. His term is four years from April 2023 to March 2027.

Sado is 60 years old born in Kyoto. He studied under Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, the founder and honorary conductor of the New Japan Philharmonic. After he won the Besancon International Conductor Competition in France in 1989, he has been active in conducting.

He is currently the Music Director of the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Austria, the Artistic Director of the Hyogo Performing Arts Center, and the Principal Conductor of the Siena Wind Orchestra.

His first co-star with the New Japan Philharmonic was in 1988, and he co-starred in his first domestic debut concert after winning the Besancon’s. After that, he joined the New Japan Philharmonic’s conductors from 1992 to 1995, and has performed more than 90 times so far.

According to the announcement, Sado will be appointed as a music adviser for one year from April 2022 prior to becoming a music director.

The New Japan Philharmonic will mark the 50th anniversary of its founding in the 2021/2022 season. Sado will also stand on the podium for performances that will mark the 50th anniversary from January 2022.
