US conductor Dennis Russell Davies has been appointed as the principal conductor of the MDR Symphony Orchestra based in Leipzig. The term of office is four years from the 2020/2021 season. The chief conductor was vacant after Kristjan Järvi served from the 2012/2013 season to the 2017/2018 season.

Davis is 75 years old born in Ohio, USA. He has been active in various orchestras since the 1980s. Music Director of Stuttgart State Opera (1980-1987), Music Director of Bonn Municipal Theater (1987–1996), Principal Conductor of the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien (1997–2002), Music Director of the Linz Bruckner Orchestra (2002-2017), served as the Principal conductor of the Basel Symphony Orchestra (2009-2016). During the 2018/2019 season, he was the principal conductor of the Brno Philharmonic.
