Soprano singer, Montserrat Caballé, died at a hospital in his hometown Barcelona on the 6th. She was 85 years old. The cause of death has not been disclosed, but since September she was hospitalized due to a gall bladder disease. Spain’s Prime Minister Sanchez posted on Twitter “Her voice and kindness will stay with us forever” and mourn that death.The funeral is held in Barcelona on Monday.

She played an excellent Belcanto singing skill and beautiful voice, one of the best soprano singers of the 20th century. The repertoire ranging from the Baroque period to the opera of Richard Strauss, centered on the Belcanto opera of Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti etc, played about 90 roles.

Caballé was born in Barcelona in 1933. After learning at Liceu Conservatory, She learned further in Milan. In 1956 She became a member of the Basel Opera in Switzerland and debuted as a professional opera singer in the role of Mimi of “La Bohème” in 1957. As a substitute for Marilyn Horne in the concert of “Lucrezia Borgia” performed at Carnegie Hall in New York in 1965, she was a sensational success with a clap of 25 minutes, she became a star singer in overnight.

In that year, she also debuted at the Metropolitan Opera by singing Marguerit of “Faust”. After that she made her debut one after another in a prominent opera house, and in a blink of time ran up the star singer. It is said that more than 4000 performances have been performed in various parts of the world during more than 50 years of career. She strove to nurture her juniors and also looked to José Carreras from Barcelona. When a request for performance came, she often appointed a partner role in order to have Carreras experience.

Even after retiring from the front line of opera, she was also active in German television programs with its bright character. In 1988 she released a album with Freddie Mercury who was a vocalist of the UK rock band “Queen”. One of them “Barcelona” was used as the theme song of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. She has appeared with Carreras and Placido Domingo at the opening ceremony.

In 1985 she was hospitalized with brain tumor for 3 months and in 1993 she was treated for heart disease. She was convicted by tax evasion in 2015 (with execution for 6 months) and she made a media incident for the first time in a while.
