TOKYO 〓 Suntory Hall establishes a new ensemble dedicated to contemporary music; Ryusuke Numajiri named “Founding Conductor”

2026/08/14

A new ensemble specializing in contemporary music is set to launch in Tokyo. Established by Suntory Hall—which is marking its 40th anniversary—the group will welcome Ryusuke Numajiri as its founding conductor. It will make its debut on August 22 at the Suntory Hall Summer Festival 2026.

The newly formed group has been named “Ensemble Go For It”—a name derived from the English translation of the phrase “Yatte Minahare” (Give it a try), famously coined by Suntory founder Shinjiro Torii. Comprising young musicians aged 39 and under, the ensemble is led by Akira Mizutani, concertmaster of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra.

Numajiri, who played a pivotal role in establishing the ensemble as its founding conductor, expressed his vision: “Until now, the performance of contemporary works has largely relied on individual musicians who are personally motivated to take them on. I have long felt the need for a collective of performers—a single vessel—that could serve as a hub bringing these individuals together.”

Numajiri explains that he gathered young musicians because he “wanted to share the spirit of persistently taking on new challenges.” Plans are in place to hold several performances a year, with the hope that audiences will “incorporate new music into their daily lives.”
