MUNICH 〓 A new hall will be built to serve as the home of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra

2021/07/18

A new hall will be built in Munich, home to the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks). The construction proposal has recently been approved by the Bavarian government.

According to the plan, the new hall will be built in the eastern area where factories are concentrated, with a budget of 700 million euros.

It consists of three parts: a large hall with a capacity of 1900, a small hall with a capacity of 400, and a hall for multimedia with a capacity of 200.

The building is designed by “Cukrowicz Nachbaur Architekten” in Bregenz, Austria, and the acoustic design is done by Yasuhisa Toyota of Nagata Acoustics.

From this September, the Munich Philharmonic-based “Gasteig” will begin renovation work in Munich. In October, the Isar Philharmonic Hall (capacity of 1900 people) will open as an alternative hall.

The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra has long been based in Hercules Hall in Munich’s former royal palace, but space is tight and equipment is aging.

Mariss Jansons, who was the chief conductor until his death in 2019, was urging the construction of a new hall.
