Moritzburg Castle, located in the suburbs of Dresden, the ancient capital of Germany, was built by Duke Moritz of Saxony in 1546 as a hunting lodge.

The Renaissance-style building was reconstructed in the Baroque style over a period of 10 years starting in 1723 during the reign of King Augustus. Surrounded by a man-made pond, it looks like a castle on a lake.

Each of the four halls is decorated with leather wallpaper, luxurious furniture, and china. The antlers on the walls of the dining room, including the world’s largest red deer antler called “Moritzburger 24-Ender,” are considered to be one of the finest collections in Europe.

It was in 1993 that a chamber music festival was founded in such an old castle. The core members of the festival were Jan Vogler, principal cellist of the Staatskapelle Dresden(Saxon State Opera Orchestra), Kai Vogler, concertmaster, and Peter Bruns, principal cellist.

They were aiming for the “Marlboro Music Festival” in the United States. Kai was the artistic director of the festival from 1993 to 2000, after which he passed the baton to Jan. Jan has been president of the Dresden Music Festival since 2009.

To get to the castle from Dresden, take the S-Bahn train from Dresden Central Station to Radebeul Ost Station, about 15 minutes away, and then take the SL train operated by the Lesnitzgrund Railway to Moritzburg Station, about 30 minutes away. It is a 20-minute walk from the station to the castle.

The festival now also uses nearby buildings such as Moritzburg Church, Brockwitz Castle, the Käthe Kollwitz Memorial, and an airport hangar as venues.
