The story was that an educator from Kagoshima asked Gerhard Bosse, who had been to Japan, to hold a workshop. That was in 1975. At that time, Bosse was the first concert master of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.
The music festival started in 1980 after repeated negotiations with East Germany under the socialist system. The purpose is “to create opportunities for musicians to attend education and concerts for students who are willing to study abroad.” In addition, the philosophy was “to nurture musicians who can be technically and personally independent”.
The music festival that begins in late July is about two weeks. Over time, former students have grown to become teachers who are active at the forefront. More than 50 artists from all over the world gather in Kirishima once a year, spinning music together with students, and now known as an educational music festival that represents Asia. The 35th held in 2014 was also held in Taiwan after Kirishima closed.
The main venue for the music festival is “Miyama Conseru”, which has a capacity of 770 people. Including festival orchestra concerts and mini-concerts on the street corner, over 40 performances are held, and Kirishima is full of music.
