PRAGUE 〓 Jakub Hrůša will succeed Semyon Bychkov as music director of the Czech Philharmonic, starting with the 2028/2029 season

The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra has announced that Jakub Hrůša will become its next music director. Hrůša is currently the orchestra’s principal guest conductor, and his term as music director will begin in the 2028/2029 season. He will succeed Semyon Bychkov, who has held the position since the 2017/2018 season.

Hrůša is a 43-year-old native of Brno, Czech Republic.He studied conducting at the Prague Conservatory under Jiří Bělohlávek and Radomil Eliška, and in 2008 was appointed as the successor to Bělohlávek as music director and chief conductor of the Prague Philharmonia, which Bělohlávek had founded. In 2010, he became the youngest conductor to lead the opening concert of the Prague Spring Music Festival.

In the 2016/2017 season, he was appointed chief conductor and music director of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra in Germany, with his term remaining until the end of the 2028/2029 season. Additionally, he has been appointed as the seventh music director of the Royal Opera in the UK, effective from the 2025/2026 season.
