The Bern Symphony Orchestra has extended its contract with Chief Conductor Krzysztof Urbański. Urbański has held this position since the 2024/2025 season, and this contract renewal extends his tenure for an additional five years, through 2032. From the 2023/2024 season, he has also served as Music Director of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra.
Urbanski, 43, was born in 1982 in Pawianice, Poland. After attending a local music school, he went on to study at the Fryderyk Chopin Institute of Music in Warsaw, where he studied conducting under Antoni Wit. Upon graduating in 2007, he won the conducting category at the 62nd Prague Spring International Music Competition.
He subsequently served as Chief Conductor of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra in Norway (2010–2017) and Music Director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in the United States (2011–2021). He also served as Principal Guest Conductor of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra from 2013 to 2016.
