The London Symphony Orchestra has announced its 2024/2025 season. The new season marks the first season with Antonio Pappano as Chief Conductor, succeeding Simon Rattle. The orchestra will spotlight the 100th anniversary of the composer Pierre Boulez’s birth, and will give more than 70 performances a year as the resident orchestra of the Barbican Center.

According to the announcement, the new season will open on September 11 with Pappano at the podium conducting a new work by James MacMillan and Sibelius’ Symphony No. 1. Outside of concerts, Pappano will conduct Puccini’s “La Rondine” in concert format and Richard Strauss’ “Salome” with Asmik Grigorian.

Among the guest conductors, Honorary Conductor Simon Rattle will appear in January and May, and will hold two birthday concerts as he turns 70. Meanwhile, laureate conductor Michael Tilson Thomas will turn 80 in December, but will precede his appearance on the podium in October to conduct Mahler’s Symphony No. 2.

As for Boulez, principal guest conductor François-Xavier Roth will lead a concert celebrating the composer’s music and legacy. Other guest conductors include Daniele Rustioni, Klaus Mäkelä, Barbara Hannigan, Gianandrea Noseda, Daniel Harding, Gustavo Dudamel, and Susanna Malkki.
