Composer Georg Friedrich Handel (1685 – 1759) is a German-born composer who was active in the UK and finally naturalized. This music festival is held by the London Handel Society. The association was founded in 1978 by Dennis Darlow, organist and conductor of St. George’s Church, where Handel was a parish. The association has been researching and playing music with him and his contemporaries, and has specialized in activities that focus on the performance of lesser-known works.
The music festival is based in St. George’s Church, with Royal Music College and Royal Academy of Music. Handel’s former residence, Handel House, is now a museum, but it is also one of the performance venues. Handel lived there from 1723 to 1759 and produced many masterpieces. Hundreds of years later, guitarist Jimmy Hendrix moved to the next room and became a hot topic.
The scale has been expanded steadily since its establishment, and in 1981 the London Handel Orchestra and London Handel Singers were founded. Furthermore, in 1999, a London Handel players, they were formed and plays a central role in the festival. In 2002, Lawrence Cummings became the music director as s successor of Darlow. He is conductor and harpsichord player, who was the head of the Royal Music Academy’s ancient music department since 1996, In the same year, a vocal competition for young singers was also established.
