The festival is a comprehensive arts festival that includes theatre, music, dance, and art, with approximately 250 events taking place in 20 venues during the 15-day exhibition. Visitors exceed 100,000, the largest in Northern Europe. In the classical music genre, various artists such as London Sinfonietta, Janine Jansen of Violin and Lang Lang of Piano participate in the 2017 festival.
Bergen is located in the fjord on the southwest coast of Norway, with a population of over 260,000 and the second largest city in Norway after the capital Oslo. Facing the sea, it prospered as a center of trade for a long time, and it was the capital from 1217 to 1299. It is still the Norwegian shipping, academic, tourism and financial center and the base of the North Sea oil field. In 2000, it was chosen as the European Capital of Culture. From this city, there are also global composers such as Edvard Grieg and Ole Bull.
The festival is centered on the both the former residence of Grieg and Ole Bull, Grieg Hall, and the National Theater. The National Theater was founded in 1850 and Henrik Ibsen was the artistic director. Grieg Hall, with 1500 seats, is the music hall that the opening celebrated at the 1978 Festival and is home to the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.
