R.I.P 〓 Giya Kancheli, Georgian Composer

Composer Giya Kancheli died on the 2nd at the age of 84 due to heart disease in his hometown of Georgia, Tbilisi. After studying geology, he studied composition at the Tbilisi Conservatory and turned into a composer. For 20 years from 1971, he served as the music director of the Rustaveli Theater in Tbilisi, where he worked on many stage works and film music.

He has composed many works for seven symphony, orchestra and chamber music. His work was performed by Dennis Russell Davis, Gidon Kremer, Yuri Bashmet, Kim Kashkashan, Mstislav Rostropovich and gained worldwide fame. He moved to Berlin in 1991 and since 1995 has been based in Antwerp, Belgium.
