The board of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra in the United States has unanimously approved a declaration of financial emergency and decided to suspend the 2026–2027 concert season starting October 18. Consequently, it has been decided to furlough all 77 orchestra members and 27 full-time staff members.
According to local reports, the orchestra plans to continue operations at its home venue—the Schermerhorn Symphony Center—including facility rentals, two fundraising events, and five self-produced concerts. To achieve a turnaround, the orchestra intends to develop a new fundraising strategy to rectify the structural deficit caused by reliance on a single donor, as well as a new strategic plan to boost revenue.
Leonard Slatkin, who will serve as music director for the second time starting in the 2026/2027 season, issued a statement saying, “It is clear to me that this will be my final music director position. However, I will not abandon this orchestra; I have no intention of going anywhere until I am no longer able to maintain and further elevate its musical standards.”
