The festival is a little late from mid-August to mid-September compared to others, and is a “last runner” in the european summer music festival. The music festival was founded in 1938 with a gala concert by the legendly conductors Arturo Toscanini and others in the square of Wagner’s former residence on the shores of Lake Lucerne.In the past, “Orchestra competition” were for sales charm, and concerts of prestigious orchestras led by famous conductors were lined up.
The music festival has been expanding since 1990, and in addition to the summer music festival, Easter and autumn piano music festivals have been added. Easter Festival “OSTERN” was added in 1988, and Piano Festival “PIANO” was founded in 1999.“OSTERN” is mainly religious music and symphony. The main summer style focuses on composers and performers every year. “PIANO” is a music festival that focuses on keyboard music, featuring not only classical music, but also a wide range of famous soloists and notable young pianists.
Furthermore, in 2003, the “Lucerne Festival Orchestra” was newly established as the resident orchestra, and the famous conductor Claudio Abbado was greeted as its music director. Until his death in 2014, it was one of the rare opportunities to experience the music of the great conductor and creatived many masterpieces. The festival orchestra is now led by Riccardo Chailly and has performed around the world. “PIANO” is said to be abolished in 2019, but it is a long-established music festival that attracts more than 100,000 audiences in the summer alone.
