Leonard Bernstein celebrating 100 years of birth in 2018. While developing a variety of activities as conductor, composer, and educator, he was instrumental in teaching young musicians at the Tanglewood Music Festival in America, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany.
This music festival is an Asian version of an educational music festival for young performers he worked on. Founded in 1990.
This festival centered on the PMF Academy is held with world class musicians at lecturers. Participating members are selected in auditions from around the world and are instructed for about a month in July.
During the festival, the PMF Orchestra organized by members participating in the Academy, the concert by the lecturer’s performer will be held at the “Kitara” Sapporo concert hall, and the outdoor stage in “Sapporo Art Park”. Successive artistic directors have served as major conductors. Since 2015, Valery Gergiev has served.
Bernstein, the creator of this festival, came to Japan with the London Symphony Orchestra at the first festival, but suddenly died immediately after that, it was the first and last participation. But Bernstein’s will has been passed down from generation to generation.
The performers who have studied with PMF have already passed 3,800 people, are active in scattered around more than 200 orchestras around the world, and are active in various music scenes.
