BRUSSELS 〓 French pianist Jonathan Fournel wins the piano section of the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition

2021/05/31

French pianist Jonathan Fournel won the piano division of the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition in Brussels, the capital of Belgium. Russia’s Vitaly Starikov is second, and Japan’s Keigo Mukawa is third.

The Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition is one of the three major competitions in the world, along with the Tchaikovsky International Competition and the Chopin International Piano Competition.

The piano division was held last year, but it was postponed for one year due to the spread of the new coronavirus.

58 people who passed the video screening participated in this piano section. Twelve people who passed the recital-style first qualifying proceed to the second qualifying (usually 24 people).

In the second qualifying, the recital and the orchestra are divided into Performances, and six of them proceed to the final round.

The winner, Fournel, is 27 years old, born in Sarrebourg, France. After graduating from the Saarbrücken Conservatory of Music in Germany, he studied at the National Conservatory of Music in Paris.

He won the Viotti International Music Competition in 2013, and since 2016 she has been an artist-in-residence at the Queen Elizabeth Music Chapel in Brussels.
