MILAN 〓 Teatro alla Scala abandons its annual opening on December 7th

Teatro alla Scala has abandoned the opening of its annual new season on December 7th. Under various regulations due to the re-expansion of the new coronavirus infection. Teatro alla Scala usually opens on December 7th, the holiday of the patron saint of the city, “St. Ambrosio”.

The opening performance was scheduled for Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, the first time since 1967. The “Lucia” was directed by Yannis Kokkos, and was scheduled to be conducted by music director Riccardo Chailly.

It was planned to appear in “Lucia” by Lisette Oropesa, Juan Diego Flores and others. Oropesa was supposed to be the second American soprano since Maria Callas sang the title role of the opening performance “Norma” in 1955.
