The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra has announced that it will replace the vacant principal flutist position with Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson from Iceland, who has completed his probationary period.
Hoskuldsson is currently 50 years old. After studying with Bernhard Wilkinson at the Reykjavik University of Music, he studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England.
Afterwards, he served as principal player of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York (2008-2016), and was invited by music director Riccardo Muti to become principal player of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2015.
The position of principal flutist at the Berlin Philharmonic had been unstable, with Mathieu Dufour briefly holding the role after transferring from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, followed by Sébastien Jacot joining the orchestra only to leave after his probationary period ended.
