The Umbria state is in central Italy. The state capital is Perugia. And it surrounded by Tuscany, Lazio, Marche state and is known as a state without sea. Assisi, famous for the Basilica of St. Francis, is also in this state.
Spoleto is a small town slightly south of Assisi is. In the city in 1958, opera composer Gian Carlo Menotti (1911-2007) representing the 20th century launched the Integrated Arts Festival.
“The two worlds” in the title means the United States and Italy. Menotti said that he wanted to make the art festival a bridge of the culture of the two countries, as he moved to the United States with the recommendation of the great conductor Arturo Toscanini.
The art festival is held from the middle of June to the beginning of July, and it is wide not only opera, but also concerts, jazz, ballet, movies.
Festival once had a time when it has topics in opera production. They were directed by Luchino Visconti, Franco Zeffirelli, Roman Polanski, Ken Russell and others.
In 1977, a sister art festival was established in Charleston, USA.
