The music festival celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2018. Ten years ago, the music festival changed its course greatly with Stephane Lissner, who was the manager of the “Théâtre du Châtelet” in Paris, as the general director.

He took over the previous line which use up-and-coming conductors such as Christophe Rousset and Marc Minkowski, and put opera using them at the center of the program.

In addition, geniuses such as Peter Brook and Patriche Chéreau were appointed as directors of the Opera performance. These performances attracted much attention, and the music festival has undergone a major transformation.

In 2007, when Bernard Foccroulle inherited the Lissner, the Provence Grand Theater also opened. In 2009, Wagner’s Music drama“The Twilight of the Gods” was staged by the Berlin Philharmonic led by Simon Rattle.

In 2018, Pierre Audi became general director. The music festival has been further enhanced by the genius who has served as the Holland National Opera (1988-2018) and the Artistic Director of the Holland Festival (2005-2014).

Southern France Aix-en-Provence, the birthplace of the painter Cézanne, was an ancient city that flourished as a spa town in the Roman period and later as the capital of the county of Provence.

Aix-en-Provence is also called the “fountain city” because of the number of fountains said to exceed 100.

At first, you will be confused by the sunshine of the summer, but in the evenings, you will find quiet lights in the cafes as if you were cooling the daytime. It’s a city with plenty of time after the performance.
