The Italian “Guido Cantelli International Conductor Competition” will be Resurrection.

The contest to commemorate the Italian conductor was finished by 10th edition in 1980. However, in commemoration of his birth 100th anniversary, his hometown of Novara will be held in September this year as the “11th edition”.

Cantelli was born in 1920 and is the first-generation of the post-war conductor in Italy. His talent has been garnering attention since from Milan Conservatory.

After military service he was given the opportunity to conduct the Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala for the first time in 1945.

Later, it was noticed by the legendly conductor Arturo Toscanini, and in January 1949 he conducted the NBC Symphony Orchestra and made his debut in the United States.

He debuted at the Salzburg Festival in 1953. At the festival of 1956, which is the 200th anniversary of Mozart’s birth, he was in charge of conducting “Così fan tutte”.

Shortly thereafter, at the age of 36, he was appointed Musical Director of Teatro alla Scala, replacing Victor De Sabata. However, about a week later he died in aircraft clash in Paris.

The competition was founded in 1963 with the aim of discovering young conductors. Competition has sent many conductors to the world, such as Riccardo Muti, Michiyoshi Inoue, Adam Fischer, Hubert Soudant, and Lothar Zagrosek after the first winner Eliahu Inbal.

This competition is for ages 18 to 35. Conducting the Orchestra of Teatro Regio di Parma from September 9 to 12, the final selection will take place at Novara’s Teatro Coccia on November 13.

The jury chair was Donato Renzetti, who won the 10th Competition in 1980.
