On September 25, the NHK Symphony Orchestra launched a complete cycle of Beethoven’s symphonies to commemorate its own centenary and the 200th anniversary of the composer’s death.
Chief Conductor Fabio Luisi conducted Symphonies No. 1 and No. 3 (“Eroica”) on the opening day. The orchestra will perform Symphonies No. 1 through No. 8 as part of its “Program C” subscription series running through December, concluding the cycle with year-end performances of the Ninth Symphony conducted by Marek Janowski.
October 5 marks the anniversary of the founding of the NHK Symphony Orchestra. Next up, Christoph Eschenbach will conduct Symphonies Nos. 8 and 5 (October 23–24). Subsequently, Tugan Sokhiev will conduct Symphonies Nos. 2 and 6 (“Pastoral”) (November 13–14), followed by Charles Dutoit conducting Symphonies Nos. 4 and 7 (December 4–5).
In 2027, a complete cycle of Beethoven’s piano concertos will also begin. The performances will feature Concerto No. 1 with conductor Fabio Luisi and pianist Alessandro Taverna (January 22–23); No. 2 with Tadaaki Otaka and Yunchan Lim (February 12–13); No. 3 with Elim Chan and Alice Sara Ott (April 23–24); No. 4 with Kent Nagano and Till Fellner (May 21–22); and No. 5, the “Emperor,” with Thomas Guggeis and Kirill Gerstein (June 18–19).
