On August 7, the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra will hold a concert at Suntory Hall—its first performance in Tokyo in 33 years. Conducted by Music Director Ryusuke Numajiri and featuring pianist Yu Kosuge, the evening will consist entirely of works by Richard Strauss.
Based in Yokohama, the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra marks its 56th anniversary this year. Featuring violinist Yasunao Ishida as Chief Solo Concertmaster and led by Numajiri—who has held the position since 2022—the orchestra maintains a vigorous schedule of activities, including the “Dramatic Series” of semi-staged operas.
According to the orchestra, the first Tokyo performance took place on November 12, 1987, under the baton of Hideomi Kuroiwa. Subsequent concerts were held in 1990 and 1992, with the fourth and final performance taking place on March 23, 1993. Conducted by Yuzo Toyama, the fourth concert featured a program comprising Yasushi Akutagawa’s *Symphony for Organ and Orchestra*, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, and Schumann’s Symphony No. 3, “Rhenish.”
The program for the Tokyo performance on the 7th features Richard Strauss’s symphonic poem 《Don Juan》; 《Burleske》, with Yu Kosuge as soloist; and the symphonic poem 《Don Quixote》, featuring principal cellist Shohei Uwamori and violist Ryo Oshima.
